'Bring a Parent' Judo classes were held from Monday 7 November to Wednesday 9 November at the Howick and St Heliers dojos.
Invitations were sent out to all parents and guardians of students from the Beginners to Intermediate classes, inviting them to attend a training session with their child.
It was an opportunity for the parents to learn some basic Judo techniques and to practice them with their child. It was also a chance for the students to show their accompanying adult that Judo is not as easy as it looks from the seats around the Judo mat. The turnout of adults was amazing with the students enjoying the chance to show off what they have learned.
The training sessions followed the same routine as a normal training session with a warmup, followed by some technique training and ended with Shiai 'fight to win'.
Some of the classes were more competitive than others with the parents determined not to be beaten in the fight at the end. The way some of the parents were getting into it, there were going to be some sore bodies at work the next day.
Sensei's Lawrie, Craig and Lorraine prodived the instruction and guidance to the parents, and they were assisted by club members from the Adult and Intermediate classes. Thanks to all those involved.
With the success of the 'Bring a Parent' classes this year it will feature again on the club calendar sometime in 2012.
